What a race this weekend in Fontana. The show continues to improve each week, as we near the crowning of our 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup champion. In the closest points race in NASCAR chase history, we are witnessing some of the best competitive driving in years. In order to win the cup this year you will have to drive perfect, there is no room for error.
The Good…
JIMMIE JOHNSON – For those of you who think his day in the spotlight is over, well guess again. He will continue to dominate going into the next five races. If Jimmie heads to Homestead as the points leader by more than 50 points you might as well order your 4-time t-shirts early.
JUAN PABLO MONTOYA – Has driven the wheels off the car during this Chase with four top five finishes, he is proving to be a top contender. One mistake by Jimmie Johnson or Mark Martin and JPM is going to be your next Sprint Cup Champion.
The Bad…
KURT BUSCH – It’s always bad when you make a mistake that costs you the chance at a championship, but when you successfully kill the chances of two other chase drivers in the matter of three tenths of a second well that’s “really” bad. Busch had been fighting a loose car all day, and it had already bitten him a couple of times before he wrecked Kasey Kahne and Greg Biffle.
DENNY HAMLIN – As the only Joe Gibbs Racing driver in the chase I am sure he has enough pressure on him as it is. But when you are the pole sitter and race leader, you better make sure you clear the other drivers heading into turn one, because if there is one guy who will not check up to save you it’s Juan Pablo Montoya. Now a long shot to win the chase, I look to see how he bounces back next week.
The Ugly…
BRIAN VICKERS – What’s ugly about this is that Brian is 351 points out of the chase. That means he is two full races behind Jimmie Johnson, and that is just ugly. I was really looking forward to seeing what Brian Vickers could do in the 2009 Chase. If Red Bull Racing could build him a car that could run for an entire race, I think his chase would be a lot different. While he has no realistic shot to be the champion this year, he could still turn some heads before the season is out.
KASEY KAHNE – I am sorry, I watched you “Butt Ram” Jeff Burton on national television at full speed. After which you go on to blame NASCAR for a phantom debris caution. Maybe you should have blamed your crew chief for not teaching you where the brake pedal is. What’s ugly about this is the way you are going about blaming others for everything.
NASCAR did this… There is no leadership at RPM…Maybe you should focus on the track.
This is how I see it from “Atop the Pit Box”. How do you see it, post your comments below?
